Job Title: Director of Communications Salary: circa £45,000, 35 hours per week Contract: Full time, permanent Location: London or Manchester
We are looking for an innovative and collaborative Director of Communications for akt, the national LGBTQ+ youth homelessness charity working with 16 - 25 year olds you who are facing or experiencing homelessness, or living in a hostile environment.
Since 1989 akt has supported over 50,000 young people into safe homes and better futures, in a welcome and open environment that celebrates LGBTQ+ identities.
24% of young people who are homeless identify as LGBTQ+, and 77% believe that coming out to their parents was the main factor. Once homeless, LGBTQ+ young people are more likely to face violence and discrimination than young people who aren't LGBTQ+. They're also more likely to develop substance misuse issues and experience sexual exploitation. This can all take a huge toll on someone's physical and mental health and the charity's work is a vital resource at a time of real vulnerability.
akt helps LGBTQ+ young people to stay safe in a crisis and find emergency accommodation, providing a range of services that ensure that help is given quickly when needed. The charity also facilitates access to specialist support, education and training, in order to develop skills as well as identify and achieve life goals.
As Director of Communications, you will be a member of the senior management team, and will provide leadership as well as strategic direction for the charity's Communications function. Your task will be to ensure that akt's cause, work, and services, reach young people in need, supporters, and the general public; strengthening and developing the organisation's brand and profile.
Working across all Communications disciplines, this is a broad role with responsibility for developing innovative and successful campaigns; advising the board on crisis communications; engaging more young people using targeted digital and social media; as well as developing akt's brand identity. You will also lead on the development and management of strategic external partnerships with the press, media and other professionals across the communications industry; and lead a small, talented, team.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a Communications professional who works in a collaborative, innovative, and agile way. The charity is happy to consider applications from individuals with previous Head or Director of Communications experience, as well as from individuals who are ready to step into their first senior management position.
Core experience vital to the role is significant experience gained in a communications setting, including; managing a multi-disciplinary team; proven experience of partnership working and stakeholder management at the highest levels; and demonstrable experience of developing and leading campaigns that have made a positive impact on the external positioning of an organisation and its cause.
The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills with the ability to negotiate and influence, as well as interpret complex information clearly and concisely to a range of audiences. In addition, you'll be a natural leader with the ability to inspire others.
